Create your own karaoke with Pinnacle Studio

Patrice, a visitor like you, asked me how to create a "Karaoke" effect, where the text scrolls along with the music. ..
Of course it is always possible to create a classic title, and to apply a 2D lateral sliding transition. This works, but the result is rather unsatisfactory. Due to lack of ready-made solution, I proposed to Patrice to create a little montage theme, that you could find in the Titles series under the sweet name of "222 - Karaoke".
I chose a montage theme to a "motion title" as montage theme is easier to duplicate with the same framing from a sentence to the next one, and in addition, it offers the possibility to choose colors of sentence when in active periods (corresponding to words being pronounced) as well as for passive times (those before and after).

To illustrate this tutorial, I'll do a karaoke with the first minute of the famous "Jump" by Van Halen.
Typing "Jump lyrics Van Halen" in google, makes you immediately falls on the text of the lyrics, which we will store in a file. Here is the first minute ...

I get up, and nothin' gets me down
You got it tough, I've seen the toughest around
And I know, baby, just how you feel
You got to roll with the punches and get to what's real

Ah, can't ya see me standin' here
I got my back against the record machine
I ain't the worst that you've seen
Ah, can't ya see what I mean?

Ah, might as well jump, jump!
Might as well jump
Go ahead an' jump, jump!
Go ahead and jump

Step 1: Create the video on the timeline

To begin, start Pinnacle Studio (version 12.1 or higher only!)
To make a karaoke, you will of course need a video or soundtrack of the song aa well as lyrics text. All this is can be got quite simply on the internet, but remember that piracy harms the creation
Failing to get video, you can always make a slideshow (there are plenty of montage themes on this site expressly for that !) with images collected from various sources, and get the soundtrack to your audio CD !
Be sure, however, to let free the title track (or overlap track). We will use it to insert the theme "karaoke" !

To find a video, we can proceed in the same way as for the lyrics of the song, (this is not correct, I know, but it's just to illustrate this tutorial !!!!). It just remains to integrate it into Studio, it is usually more complicated with .flv files. Personnaly, I converted them using MediaCoder , an open source transcoding software that works pretty well, and for Free.

... After a few minutes of effort, the video is finally ready on my timeline, editing work can begin ...  If you have installed the corresponding montage theme, you justa have now to synchronize the words on music !

Step 2: Put montage theme on the timeline and select the options

As usual, I designed my theme so that it can be customized easily. Of course, you do not have to like my default settings, and to avoid repeating its settings for each sentence of the song, here's a little trick ...
Start by placing the topic Karaoke on the title track. In the theme editor, adjust the various settings to get the desired rendering.
  • parameter "Background" will allow you to choose a color for the background of the text speech. I suggest you choose the color according to the dominant hue of the video, to highlight it.
  • reduce the lenght of parameter "Text", this will facilitate further work.
  • adjust the font size with "Size".
  • color "On" is used to select the color that will be given to the words when pronouced...
  • color "Off " adjusts the gray level of the sentence displayed. According the dominant color of the background, you will rather choose from white to black.
  • The last cursor "Duration" is used to adjust how many letters will be colored simultaneously when pronounced.

Once this is done, to keep your settings from a sentence to the other, click on the theme and to duplicating the theme for each new sentence use keystrokes (CTRL + C) & (CTRL +V) (copy/paste). So, you keep the same settings, and will then only have to change the text ...

Step 3: Synchronize each theme to the corresponding words

Let's go in the main purpose of this tutorial !
Place the montage theme "karaoke" at the beginning of the pronouced sentence. This theme "karaoke" is stretchable, so its length can be adjusted without truncating embedded effects inside. Thus, according to the rhythm of the pronounced sentence, simply adjust the length of the theme by seizing one of its sides with the mouse.
By adjusting the position of the 2 sides of the theme to fit with the pronounced sentence, you will get the desired effect

Obviously the system to its limits ...
You can only place in a theme a sentence pronouced according a roughly constant rate ...

again, here are 2 tips:
the first is appropriate to the words on which the song remains particularly long. To compensate for this break in the rhythm, you can duplicate the character of the corresponding syllable.

The second trick is simply to insert spaces in the text. Indeed, the theme will spend much time to process these spaces like for any other character, this introducing a short delay in the rhythm of the text scroll.
Theme "Karaoke" is designed to manage up to 100 characters, which normally correspond up to two sentences of text.

Step 4: Iterate until you have finished ...

Continue in the same way, by copying and pasting the last theme used by clicking on "karaoke" theme and then using (CTRL + C) then (CTRL + V). Then copy/paste the following sentence from your text file containing the lyrics to the text field of the theme interface. Adjust start and end position.
Iterate this process until the end of the song, and you should get something like this on your timeline:

@Wilson,
I think you are using Avid ou Studio 16 ?
In such case, you have seen that this series is not fully compatible ...
Nevertheless, you can try to copy this file C:UsersPublicDocumentsPinnacleContentIMG-Templates20cents Titres-Assetsvide.png as C:UsersPublicDocumentsPinnacleContentIMG-Templates20cents Titres-Assets10 Fondu.png (this will replace the existing file), then re-launch Studio.
With S12 to S15, the background combobox allows to display or not this background.
